What are some good "Chewie's". Since we stopped giving Lucy Raw Hides I don't know what to give her? I need something that will occupy her and not hurt her :) Thanks.

Daisy goes nuts for her Nylabones but for the meaty food, she has me to supply her with lunch meats and cheese. I know I spoil her!! ;)

Try Enza-dent. Comes in a silver bag. I get mine from the vet. Babette also loves greenies....I heard they're bad, but I only give them when I'm able to supervise.

I'm wanting something that will last for a while and not be greasy on the carpet. I think there are certain rawhides that are o.k. for dogs but I don't remember which kind.

LOL, that's why we use Nylabones for that purpose. :o We just didn't want to be right behind her constantly spot-cleaning with an old rag and carpet cleaner.

Mine get this:

One like this, but not glow in the dark, or flavored...Just the silly cheap generic one that would last if you washed it in the dishwasher!

And this is the only greenies:

I am looking for the article on why I never feed greenies...The tiny pieces and stick to the insides, and there is a photo article about it somewhere...It isn't the danger of choking or gulping, as much as the product does not digest...I will try to find it.

Andie you are right Here is the article (http://www.kirotv.com/consumer/5325021/detail.html) I saw before.

Thanks for posting that article Tam!

That is one, but the actual one I saw that REALLY scared me was actual pictures, with the inside lining of a dogs stomach....It had ACTUAL fragments of CHEWED up greenies stuck to it...all over it.....so that says even if they are great chewers and don't gulp pieces, they are still so dangerous! I figured my dogs enjoy walking, playing and getting attention as much, and that isn't nearly as dangerous as taking a chance, even if it is a small one!

Stetson likes Nylabones too, but only the chicken flavored ones. Maybe Lulu would like those, too.

I bought Duke on of those recently to try because I've heard other people mention them. When I opened it, it smelled SO bad I couldn't give it to him! It smelled fishy...Gross! Do they always smell like that or did I just get a bad one?

they are made from bull penises...I find the smell depends on the brand....some smell more than others, IMO. Smelly or not though, Bosley LOVES them!

Yeah... Bully sticks are pizzle :)

That might sound gross, but they're healthy, natural and very good for chewing.
Robby likes them a lot, and the stinkier the better!

The ONLY chews Maya likes other than Tarter Busters are this brand of rawhides:
http://www.hartz.com/Our%20Products/products500/7634730080.jpg

if you ever see her chewing on something in one of her photos or videos, that's what she's having.

She refuses to chew bully sticks, Nylabones, or other types of raw hides... even if Robby's having them.

Not that I'd have it any other way. I love the fact that she's so strong willed. She's my baby girl. :)

Cyrus, are those the good kind that don't get all bunched up in the digestive track? I'm sure that is a really dumb question considering I know how you are about the dogs, but was just wondering :)

I’m glad that you asked. :) It’s true that we try to take good care of Maya and Robby, but we all make mistakes... sometimes we don’t know any better, and sometimes we do things without even questioning the logic behind it.

When it comes to chew treats, I’d recommend Kongs and maybe nylabones or bully sticks before raw-hides, but that’s mainly because:

1) not all raw-hides are created equal (shape, size, and quality makes a difference). Some contain artificial flavours and colouring... others are poorly manufactured and treated with too many chemicals. Some are “pressed” into shape instead of being rolled, so they’re unnaturally tough.

2) some dogs like to swallow them as soon as the pieces are soft enough, and that can be a chocking hazard. Dogs always need to be supervised when they’re having raw-hides.

Having said that, these particular sticks seem to be good. They're natural, in the sense that they don't contain any artificial flavour or colouring, and they're not overly bleached (like those ghostly white raw hides) or pressed into strange shapes that might cause obstructions. It's just a piece of hide rolled into a tube.

They’re made in the US from US-cattle (many raw hides aren’t). They seem to be easily digestible and we've never found a trace of the sticks in their stool. I've also tried putting them in water over-night to see what happens, and they don't really expand, they just become really really soft.

You can even get thicker rolls (sticks) from the same company. The thicker sticks are called Retrievers:
http://www.hartz.com/Our%20Products/browse.asp?ALL=03&Q=01

They'll last longer, and they’re safer to chew (they can’t be easily swallowed)... but we just don't use them because Maya won't go back to chewing them once they’re “used.” She likes them when they’re fresh.

I don’t recommend the ones that are shaped into bones because I’m worried that they’ll manage to remove the end and swallow it, so the rolled sticks are the safest bet.

I would love to give Clover some things to chew on but I'm afraid she's going to swallow things whole. I gave her a rawhide the vet gave us when we first got her and she tried to chew it then swallow it whole! I had to drag it out of her mouth - thank god she's mellow!!

Don't worry, I don't give her those anymore. We've started the all human-grade food diet and are starting off eliminating beef and chicken and corn. She's on potato and lamb and duck.

So after the rawhide fiasco, I gave her a piece of duck jerkey that I thought she could chew and chew on until it was in small pieces but NOPE, that went straight down her throat, too.

Any suggestions on something to give her to chew on that she WON'T just swallow whole?? Or something that I can give her that I can pull apart that she can still chew on a little bit? Does anyone else even have this problem?

I mean, I've become a real doting Mom (Dan laughs at me) but now I take her duck jerky and pull it into small pieces for her!! Oh if she only knew how much I love her...because she LOVES the duck jerky. :)

Jill, Lucy LOVES her denta kong. She chews and chews and chews on it. Try one of those. I think she likes it so much because it has grooves that she can sink her teeth into.

The article on greenies was shocking to me. We bought Susie her first greenie when she was 3 months old. Luckily she never enjoyed them so we didn't continue buying them...scary.
